“Live in each season as it passes; breathe the air, drink the drink, taste the fruit, and resign yourself to the influence of the earth.” (Thoreau)
January is month where everything comes into focus. Even the trees in their bareness reminds me how important winter seasons are; they strip everything down to the most authentic and pure form. It’s beautiful to see the dark branches stretch out against the bright sky.
The past few weeks, I’ve been reflecting a lot on the areas in my life that I want to develop this year. I’ve been writing down specific intentions around my spiritual life, my marriage, motherhood, and friendship. All this introspective work can feel a little intense, so I’ve been collecting some tunes to brighten up the days.
There are certain things instantly change the atmosphere of a room and our inner world. On these gray January days, candles, music, cozy blankets, hot casseroles, and good books create an uplifting and warm mood inside when its cold and dreary outside.
The past few weeks I can’t stop listening to hymns, music from La La Land (a must see for anyone needing a happy escape from the winter weather), and whimsical songs from The Innocence Mission. I put together a little playlist on Spotify of Winter songs for some uplifting sounds to fill your spaces this season.
I hope you are able to make room this month to focus in fresh ways. What types of music and things do you do to keep yourself thriving in winter? I would love to know what your listening to and creating.
